Your ledger and your budget describe the same money in different words. This mapping tells Kompass which budget line each ledger account belongs to. Without it, actuals arrive but variance analysis cannot compare them with anything. This is not Map your budget, which works the other way: it points each line of an uploaded budget at a ledger account.

Before you start

  • Your chart of accounts is in Kompass. Connecting your accounting system brings it in; so does Upload Actuals under Settings › Data & imports, with a file that has a Chart of Accounts sheet. See Bring in your actuals.
  • A budget exists, so there are budget lines to map to.

Where you are

Open Settings › GL mapping & chart of accounts.

Steps

  1. Tick Review flagged only to see just the accounts not mapped yet.
  2. In the Budget Sub-Item column, click Select…, search for the line and pick it. The change saves at once.
  3. Work down the list, then untick the box and check the mapped ones by Account Type.
  4. Use Search accounts… to find an account by code or name.
Map by meaning, not by name. 6702 Mombasa Branch may belong under Rent, not a line called Mombasa. Ask what the money was spent on.
Several accounts can feed one line. Mapping every travel account to Travel is normal.

When it is done

The setup checklist marks this step done once every active account is mapped or ignored. Mapping also rebuilds the budget figures, so Budget vs Actuals reflects the change within a few minutes.
